Repair or Replace? How to Make the Decision for Your HVAC System [infographic]

At Climate Control Systems, we provide the very best in heating & air conditioning repair, and that includes giving you an honest recommendation about whether repair is actually feasible or if you should consider replacement instead. There are six different factors that we look at when assessing your system. If you have more questions or need information to make the decision whether to repair or replace, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Repair or Replace? How to Make the Decision for Your HVAC System

  • Size of Unit- If your HVAC system is not sized properly for your home – either undersized or oversized – this has us leaning toward replacing the system, although the other factors would also play a part in the decision.
  • Age of System- As a rule of thumb, we recommend repairing a system that is less than 12 years old and considering replacement if it is older than 12 years.
  • Extent of Problem- When you call us for heating & air conditioning repairs, we diagnose the problem and let you know if they are minor or extensive. Something major such as a blower motor, compressor, or condenser coils may make repairs less feasible and have us lean toward recommending replacement.
  • Cost of Repairs- We have found that when repairs would cost over 50% of the amount for a new unit, replacement is generally the chosen path, unless of course the unit is still under warranty and you aren’t the one paying for the repairs.
  • Efficiency- A system that isn’t giving you optimal efficiency is costing you money, and when you add in repairs, replacement can look like the better option. In most cases, a system with a SEER rating of 13 or less is best replaced to reduce monthly costs.
  • Repair History- It is normal for an HVAC system to need repairs from time to time, but anything more frequent than a couple of repairs in the past 8 or 10 years or if you’re facing the third major repair, it makes more sense to replace the unit.
